ATMAE Certification & Assessment Exams
1. HOW DO I BECOME ELIGIBLE FOR ATMAE CERTIFICATION?
Individuals are eligible to be ATMAE certified as determined by passing the relevant ATMAE exam, and meeting the specific criteria below:
Education:
Certified Controls Engineer (CCE), Certified Manufacturing Specialist (CMS), Certified Technology Manager (CTM), and Microelectro Mechanical Systems Foundation Certification (MFC)
- The applicant must be in their last year of a technical, technology, technology management or engineering-related 4-year BS or BA degree program, or have a technical, technology, technology management or engineering-related 2-year Associate (AA, AS, AAS) degree, or *Equivalency.
Certified in Engineering Graphics (CEG), and Certified Technical Professional (CTP)
- The applicant must be in their last year of technical, technology, technology management or engineering-related 4-year BS or BA degree program or be in their second year of a technical, technology, technology management or engineering-related 2-year Associate (AA, AS, AAS) degree program, or *Equivalency.
Lean Six Sigma
- The applicant must be in their last year of a technical, technology, technology management or engineering-related 4-year BS or BA degree program, and the applicant is working on or seeking work on lean six sigma projects.
*Equivalency: Equivalent educational qualifications based on formal education and 5 years minimum professional experience may be used to satisfy the above educational eligibility criteria.
2. IF I PASS THE EXAM, AM I "AUTOMATICALLY" CERTIFIED?
Starting January 1, 2021 candidates that pay the individual exam fee will be automatically certified upon passing the exam. Candidates that have passed a group assessment exam provided by an ATMAE accredited institution must apply for certification and pay the certification fee within one year of passing the exam.
The fees are:
- Student member application fee is $25; Non-member student application fee is $50.
- Professional member application fee is $50; Non-member professional application fee is $150.
3. HOW DO I RECEIVE A COPY OF MY CERTIFICATE AFTER PASSING THE EXAM?
Certified Controls Engineer (CCE), Certified in Engineering Graphics (CEG), Certified Manufacturing Specialist (CMS), Certified Technology Manager (CTM), Certified Technical Professional (CTP), and Microelectro Mechanical Systems Foundation Certification (MFC)
- Individuals taking the CCE, CEG, CMS, CTM, CTP or MFC exam will receive a certificate after passing the exam. An email will be sent within 5 days after verifying your test results with instructions for downloading your certificate.
- Candidates that have passed a group assessment exam provided by an ATMAE accredited institution must apply for certification and pay the certification fee - See Item #2 above.
Lean Six Sigma (CLSS)
- Individuals taking the Lean Six Sigma exam will receive a pass or fail result. The score determines the Lean Six Sigma level (Yellow Belt, Green Belt, Black Belt). The exam score will be reviewed by the ATMAE office, and a notification sent to the examinee when the Lean Six Sigma level is determined. Normally, 7-10 days after taking the exam. The certificate is available immediately after notification, just download and print your copy.
- Candidates that have passed a group assessment exam provided by an ATMAE accredited institution must apply for certification and pay the certification fee - See Item #2 above.
4. AM I ELIGIBLE TO BE CERTIFIED BY ATMAE WHEN I GRADUATE WITH AN ATMAE-ACCREDITED TECHNOLOGY DEGREE?
No, a degree from an ATMAE-accredited technology program does not make you eligible for ATMAE certification. You must pass the ATMAE examination, and apply for certification, and pay the certification fee - See Item #2 above.
5. HOW DO I QUALIFY FOR THE SENIOR LEVEL CERTIFICATION (CSCE, CSEG, CSMS, CSTM, or CSTP)?
Individuals meeting the following criteria are eligible to be certified by ATMAE for the "senior" certification:
The applicant must be currently certified in the CCE, CEG, CMS, CTM, or CTP programs.
The applicant must report thirty (30) professional development units (PDU) of continuing education activity that were completed within 3 years prior to the application. (Please note that coursework completed in pursuit of the academic degree used as the qualifying degree for CCE, CEG, CMS, CTM, or CTP certification cannot be used to fulfill this requirement.)

6. HOW LONG DOES MY ATMAE CERTIFICATION RUN?
The initial certification as a Certified Controls Engineer (CCE), Certified in Engineering Graphics (CEG), Certified Manufacturing Specialist (CMS), Certified Technology Manager (CTM), Certified Technical Professional (CTP), and Microelectro Mechanical Systems Foundation Certification (MFC) is effective as long as the member pays their annual certification renewal fees.
Senior-level certificate holders (CSCE, CSEG, CSMS, CSTM, CSTP) must pay their annual certification renewal fees and are senior certified for a three-year cycle, in which they must report at least 30 PDUs of continuing education activity to be eligible to recertify as a CSCE, CSEG, CSMS, CSTM, CSTP for another three-year period.
Annual renewal fees are:
- Students: $25 plus $25 per certification.
- Professionals: $100 plus $35 per certification.
